Statement from Liz Welch, Executive Director of Mama Dragons

Yesterday, the U.S. Supreme Court allowed the federal government to enforce a discriminatory policy restricting passport gender markers to an individual’s sex assigned at birth. This devastating decision strips transgender, nonbinary, and intersex people of the right to choose a gender marker that aligns with their identity and truth.

Until now, U.S. passports could reflect an individual’s lived identity — with options of M, F, or X available to anyone applying for a new, corrected, or renewed document. Under this new policy, applicants are at risk of having their passports issued based solely on the sex assigned at birth, effectively outing them on official government identification and exposing them to potential discrimination, harassment, and harm.

And today, the Court is reviewing the David case, which could reopen the question of whether marriage equality remains a constitutional right for same-sex couples — a right that so many families have relied on for stability, protection, and recognition. There is a chance that the court will not revisit this particular case, but it is in line with the determination some have to overturn an important decision impacting so many.

Together, these cases are part of a larger pattern of efforts to roll back the hard-won rights of LGBTQ+ people and families. They send a dangerous message that our children’s identities, families, and futures are still open to debate.

At Mama Dragons, we refuse to let fear or prejudice define the narrative. We will continue to stand alongside parents, advocates, and allies across this country to defend the dignity, privacy, and autonomy that every person deserves.

We know that affirming homes save lives. We know that love — bold, informed, and unconditional — is stronger than fear. And we will not stop fighting for a world where every LGBTQ+ child and every family can live safely and proudly as who they are.
