ABOUT US
Fierce love. Real support. Nationwide.
Mama Dragons is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit that supports, educates, and empowers mothers of LGBTQ+ children. What began in 2013 as a handful of moms in a group chat is now a community reaching more than 25,000 parents across the United States and beyond.

Through peer-led communities, parent education, and advocacy training, we help mothers accept, affirm, and celebrate their LGBTQ+ kids, and show up for them at home, at school, and wherever laws affecting our families are made.
MISSION
We support, educate, and empower mothers of LGBTQ+ children.
VISION
We envision a world in which all mothers fiercely love, affirm, and advocate for their LGBTQ+ children.
OUR STORY
In 2013, Gina Crivello, a Utah teacher who had started a Gay-Straight Alliance, reached out to a small group of Latter-day Saint mothers of LGBTQ+ kids for advice. That message thread quickly became a lifeline for moms navigating the shared experience of raising queer children in a conservative religious culture.

The group took its name from a 2012 blog post by Meg Hendrix, written after her 13-year-old son came out. Being a "mother bear" no longer felt fierce enough, she wrote. She was now a Mama Dragon.

Word spread. The thread became a Facebook group in 2014, then local meetups, retreats, and Pride booths. In 2018, Mama Dragons became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and in 2019 we opened our doors to all mothers of LGBTQ+ children, regardless of faith tradition.

Today, Mama Dragons is a national nonprofit. Our members span faiths, cultures, political views, and every corner of the country. We partner with organizations nationwide, run national outreach to parents who need support, and stand up for LGBTQ+ families from statehouses to the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court.
Our Dragon

we’ve grown into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, reaching over 25,000 parents worldwide from a variety of backgrounds.
Our origami dragon stands for strength, resilience, and transformation. Like origami, the work of a Mama Dragon takes patience and care, folding fierce love into something strong enough to protect our kids. It reminds us that unconditional love can break down barriers and build a world where every child can thrive as themselves.
