Mama Dragons Statement on President Trump’s Recent Remarks Targeting Transgender Youth
As mothers fiercely committed to the safety, health, and dignity of all LGBTQ+ children, Mama Dragons strongly condemns President Trump’s recent use of a Child Abuse Prevention Month proclamation to vilify transgender youth and the parents who love and support them.
We stand unwaveringly with parents of transgender children who—guided by medical professionals, mental health teams, and most importantly, their children—make informed, compassionate decisions about gender-affirming care. These choices are not made lightly. They are based on decades of scientific evidence and real-world experience showing that gender-affirming care saves lives.
Regret over gender-affirming care is exceptionally rare—lower, in fact, than regret rates for common procedures like knee replacements, getting tattoos, or even having children. Trans youth and their families deserve respect and support, not political scapegoating.
We are deeply concerned about the increasing push by this administration toward exclusion and the imposition of a narrow Christian ideology onto a beautifully diverse and pluralistic nation. Families come in many forms, and no government should interfere with the sacred bond between parent and child—especially when that family is acting in the best interest of their child’s mental and physical well-being.
If this administration truly wants to address child abuse, we urge it to focus on the real data: 76% of substantiated child abuse cases involve a parent or legal guardian. Our government should be working on evidence-based policies to reduce this heartbreaking statistic—not using marginalized children as political pawns.
Our message is simple: Leave our transgender kids alone. Let loving parents, alongside trusted healthcare professionals, do what’s best for their children. And if we truly care about preventing child abuse, let’s focus on actions that will actually protect children.
